about

Slaloming between stations since early 2022, traverse is the Amsterdam-based radio series and music platform pushing a hypnotising collage of elastic bass and pulsating rhythms that slide through genre descriptions with abandon.

Now expanding into a label and experimental home for producers to explore their own versatility, traverse presents its debut compilation: traversée. An eight-track VA of moods and grooves that skips between styles and bpms through a collection of atmospheric pieces designed directly for the dancefloor.

Encouraging artists to explore creative avenues that they would have otherwise passed by, traverse is a space to share new ideas and personal reflections that aren’t tied to any one convention or formula.

Populated by producers from all corners of the world, from Brazil to Japan via Mexico and the Czech Republic, traversée 001 is a unifying body of work that truly reflects the ethos behind Lolo Batten’s traverse platform.

We asked artists to share a few words about their track.

La Dame: "To take a night walk through the less busy streets of the city, to listen to the smallest noises, the fumes of the metro, the distant and ethereal horns, the SIZZLED sounds. To hear your own heart beating near your eardrums, to make discoveries, to observe the silence, to distinguish its non-reality. This track is inspired by hard-drum, minimal dubstep and muted micro sounds to evoke a walk with dark accents but full of hope and curiosity."

phil in a maze: "Humdrum is an experimental exercise on layering, working with feedback, tape, noise, texture and various types of echoes, delays and reverbs. It was recorded while in a fight with some serious writer's block which actually ended up being quite fruitful, making me approach the whole music-making process from a very different perspective than usual, and writing some of my most personal and honest pieces of music to date."

Beatrice M.: "Caught between a passion for mental 170 halftime tribe sounds and 140 progressive dubstep-techno hybrids, I often produce a track at 140 bpm and then speed up the bpm at the last minute to see how it sounds. This is what happened with “TriForce”. Another key to my productions is the snare on the third beat, and the fact that I almost always sample scenes from the longest ongoing British TV series Doctor Who, the voices bring me comfort and reming me of the excitement of watching episodes during my teenage years."

Matteo Coffetti: "yoosa is a strange creature floating in a deconstructed digi-jumble landscape. She is surfing all over surrounded by a bubbling bassline, the up-pitchy voice playing on her mind seems to show her the way to get out while polyriddims are throwing it off marking her choppy twist eternal dance."

Oyubi: "When do you feel like dancing? When are you excited? When do you feel euphoric? The light? That sound? What did you feel? How much do you want to dance? You decide how far you want to go. Be flexible rather than adamant. A sound you know but don't know. This track was created by combining elements that are "unorthodox but have something in common" with that feeling."

DJ Whatever: "Rollin' is a track that means experimentation and genre-blending. I wanted to make a track that merges my Latin roots and the inspiration I got when I moved to Europe. Rollin' transcends boundaries and invites listeners to experience the beauty of diverse electronic music worlds colliding and embracing the endless possibilities of genre fusion."

Nog4yra: "Tambor is the result of free experimentation with bold, overlapping tones, synths and tambours. It comes from a free and detached experience of static musical concepts."

Pura Pura & Hyas: "This track is all around the sample, which comes from Piero Piccioni - an Italian composer that we love. I (Pura Pura) started working on a loop without going further. I knew Hyas would transform it in a Juke banger. The blend between this soft voice and the crazy bass makes it a perfect for the club, a bit melancholic and makes you want to give everything on the dancefloor."
